On July 3, at approximately 2 a.m., Corporal Goodwin was traveling north on Three Notch Road in the area of Exploration Drive in Lexington Park, when she observed a 2000 Plymouth Caravan swerving on Three Notch Road in front of her vehicle.
Cpl. Goodwin activated the emergency equipment on her patrol vehicle to initiate a traffic stop on the van. The driver, later identified as Tyree D. Shields, 18 of California, refused to stop and attempted to flee by driving the van through a steady red left turn traffic signal onto MacAuthur Blvd. The van then abruptly turned into the parking lot of Shoppers Food Warehouse and stopped. Cpl. Goodwin approached the van and arrested Shields.
Further investigation revealed Shields did not have permission from the owner to use the van and was operating the van without a valid driver’s license.
Shields was charged with numerous traffic violations on citations and charged criminally with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
