At 3 p.m. Nov. 12, police and rescue personnel responded to Bald Eagle Court in Newburg, south of LaPlata, for a reported accidental shooting.
Kristen Timko, public information officer for the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, tells The Bay Net that a 19-year-old Newburg man was transported to Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore with severe hand injuries as a result of the incident.
According to the report, the man loaded a 12-gauge shotgun shell with two extra rounds of 20-gauge gunpowder. When he attempted to fire the weapon, the barrel exploded in his hand causing major damage to his left hand, Timko said.
Timko refused to release the man’s name due to medial privacy laws, and said no criminal charges were filed.
