After enjoying a great meal with friends and family, many people hit the roads, but not to head home! Instead, they were headed to stores, which were opening their doors for earlier than normal “Thanksgiving Day” sales.ย
People lined up at Walmart as early as 1 p.m. to snag a 40-inch TV for $178. Sales started at some stores as early as 6 a.m. Thanksgiving morning. Kmart was one store that held their doors open from 6 a.m. Thanksgiving morning until 11 p.m. Friday night. Kmart also held a three day sale from Thanksgiving day through Saturday. Sales there included, buy one get one free shoes, buy one get one free Joe Boxer pajama sets, buy one get one free toys, and lots of other items.
Walmart had their ATV for toddlers on sale for just $98! Despite many stores being open on Thanksgiving, staff at all the stores were friendly, and seemed to love the chaos of, what may now be deemed “Black Thursday” instead of Black Friday.
However, there were some, that made it clear, they did NOT agree with the stores being open on a holiday that is supposed to be about being with family and giving thanks for what you already have.ย
When askedย how she felt aboutย working on Thanksgiving.ย a Walmart associateย replied, “I don’t feel like it’s right, I should not have to choose between my family or losing my job. I should be able to spend the day with my familyย who came in from out of town. I tried to request off, but it was denied. I was told by management that if I called out for any reason, I would be terminated. That’s not fair, if my child is sick and I can’t come in, I get fired.”ย
At what point does someone decide what is a legitimate excuse for missing work on what is undoubtedly the busiest weekend during the holiday season for retailers nationwide? Overall, it was a very fun weekend, and it seemed like everyone was excited about being out and about in the chaos.
