The 287 graduates of the Class of 2013 of Thomas Stone High School gathered on June 3 at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro to celebrate the successful completion of their high school years. The rainy weather did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the seniors as they waited for their opportunity to walk across that stage and collect their diplomas.ย  Stone students have been awarded $6 million in scholarships and 27 will go on to serve in the Armed Forces.

Under the direction of Benjamin Faris, band director, the Thomas Stone Symphonic Band played, โ€œPomp and Circumstanceโ€ as the graduates filled the arena floor, followed by presentation of the colors by the Thomas Stone High School JROTC. Kelly Flaherty led graduates and guests in the Pledge, and then were then treated to a performance of the National Anthem by the Senior Class Choir directed by Kelly Newsted, choral director, including members of the sign language class.ย

Following Greetings from the Senior Class by Kenneth Proctor, Salutatorian Alexis Rossetti emphasized that graduation day was not the end, but the beginning of a journey.ย  โ€œThis moment,โ€ she told the class โ€œwill soon be a memory.โ€ She reminded them to hold on to the memory of this brief ceremony as well as those of their high school years. Rossetti plans to study international relations but has not yet decided where to enroll.

Thanking family, friends and faculty, Valedictorian Stacey Kramer spoke about the future success of her classmates. She reminded them to define what they want their success to look like, stating that it should be as unique as they are. Kramer will be attending the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

First year Principal Michael Meisner told the class of 2013 that they will always hold a special place in his heart and mind.ย  Expressing his pride and admiration for their accomplishments, he wished them continued future success.ย  James Richmond, outgoing superintendent, thanked the students for the honor and privilege of serving them for the past 17 years and wished them the best in all their future endeavors.

With wisdom imparted, thanks and farewells expressed, Meisner announced the certification of the candidates to cheers and huge applause. Attendees enjoyed a fanfare and recessional composed by James Ployhar performed by the Symphonic Band.

Other speakers during the exercises included Former Teacher Josephine White, Janet Kimball, Aernita Dillard, Ayana Bowman, Kiara Pitts, Rachel Gardiner, Jasmin Daniels and Rickee White.
