A scheduled closed meeting between two of the Commissioners of St. Maryโs County, the Mayor of Leonardtown and the owner of one of the two sites competing for the new Leonardtown Library was abruptly cancelled when a third commissioner uninvited Todd Morgan showed up.
The media had been alerted by the third commissioner even though the proper 48 hour notice was not given. Todd Morgan(R) being a commissioner is fully aware of the open meetings act and knows that a 48 hour notice must be given. He derailed this meeting intentionally and caused the meeting to be cancelled.
When several members of the media showed up for the meeting at the commissionersโ offices, Commissioner President Randy Guy [R] came out to inform them that the meeting was closed. Guy said he had been invited to the meeting by Commissioner Mike Hewitt [R – 2nd District]].
Then Commissioner Todd Morgan [R – 4th District] arrived. Guy said he would have to cancel the meeting. The St. Maryโs County Open Meetings Law requires that a meeting with the majority of commissioners in attendance (three or more) has to be open and there is a 48-hour required notice of the meeting.
It is really unfortunate that this meeting had to be cancelled. Donald Pleasants, property owner, was invited to meet with Commissioner Mike Hewitt (R), Commission President Randy Guy (R) and Leonardtown Mayor Dan Burris to discuss land his company might donate either for a new Leonardtown library, park or a complex of sports fields.
