Saturday was the big day for one lucky contest entrant. Toyota of Southern Maryland gave away aย 2006 Scion. The contest, run by The Bay Net, had more than 100 people come to see if they would win the car.
There were nerves; there was anticipation and anxiety. Jenny Falta, before the drawing said, โJust my luck. I have to go pick up my son and theyโll probably call my name.โ
Entrant Ron Powalisz was more confident. โI won the Potomac Mills $10 grand in 2005. I feel good about this.โ
The Bay Net gathered all the entrants around the podium and with the help of a few excited youngsters โ Joseph and Emilie Altorfer, Julie, Renee, and Tessa Neely, Joyce Schmidt and Johnna OโConner, one by one; the names were drawn from the box. 20 lucky entrants would be given the opportunity to choose a key to see if they could start the car.
After two names were not there, the first lucky key holder was Terrance OโConnell. Then can Roseanna Toms, and Charlie Brown, Kitty Boone, Ronald Powalisz, John Funk, Dolly Boone, Gina Fenwick, Keith Sainsbury, Elaine Frazier, Lisa Giacchetto, Ray Anthony Fenwick, Cindy Martin, Frank Fernie, Mandy Rogers, Leslie Gross, Dalton Wood, Jr., Dennie Deleveu, and sure enough, Jenny Falta who managed to get back in time to hear her name called.
The 20 contestants then were moved outside and called in order to select a key and to try to start the Scion.
Then the real drama began!
After the last attempt, still no one had managed to start the car! The crowd grumbled, but then someone said, โI saw that girl over their turn the key in the ignition. The Bay Net and Toyota of Southern Maryland owner John Peed put their heads together to try to figure how to be fair. One of the keys did indeed start the car. Then those officiating, check the videotape of each contestant and it was determined that there was a winner.
And the winner is โฆ Dolly Boone!
Booneโs mother Kitty entered her into the contest. She is a 20-year-old college student from Lusby attending Kaplan College for Medical Assisting in Frederick, MD.
When asked about her win, Boone said beaming, โI always get called, but never ever win!โ Then she added after being asked about her family, โIโm single!โ Then she thought about it and yelled โIโM SINGLE!โ Someone in the crowd shouted back, โnot for long!โ
She smiled, honked the horn to her new car, and enjoyed the free Papa Johns pizza while her paperwork was prepared.
