LEONARDTOWN, Md. – In an effort to promote awareness of state traffic laws, the St. Maryโ€™s County Sheriffโ€™s Office posts excerpts of the 2018-2019 edition of The Maryland Vehicle Law Annotated on Tuesdays.

Adhering to the law will make roadways in St. Maryโ€™s County and in Maryland safer for drivers, passengers, bicyclists, horse-and-buggy operators and pedestrians.

Headlights on when wipers are on

Sec. 22-201.2 โ€œIf a driver of a vehicle on a highway operates the vehicleโ€™s windshield wipers for a continuous period of time because of impaired visibility resulting from unfavorable atmospheric conditions, the driver shall light the vehicleโ€™s headlamps.โ€ In other words, if itโ€™s raining or snowing, the vehicleโ€™s headlights should be on while driving.

Enforcement is a secondary action and the fine is not to exceed $25.
