Last Saturday, July 29, Trinity United Methodist Church in Prince Frederick hosted its ninth annual Summer Supper.ย  A huge crowd enjoyed fried chicken, homemade crab cakes, potato salad, pickled beets, corn on the cob and ice cream.ย  The portions were as generous as the crowd was big and everyone had a good time.

Politicians from around Calvert and around the state arrived to press the flesh and fill their bellies.ย  Most notable among them was Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele.ย  Mr. Steele enjoyed our Southern Maryland hospitality and was seen passing out hugs, smiles and handshakes all around.

ย Over 800 people dined at the church

Trinity has hosted a Winter Supper of ham and oysters for over forty years and this has trained up many organizers who have used that experience to put on a top quality event.ย  Over 100 volunteers worked together to do all of the tasks that make a big supper successful.ย  People were prepping food, frying crab cakes, steaming corn, mixing potato salad, serving customers, selling admissions, working at the baked goods tables and cleaning.ย  Lots and lots of cleaning.

You may wonder what it takes to feed over 800 people in one afternoon.ย  Well here are some of the numbers you may find interesting.ย  The church used over 350 pounds of crab meat, 70 dozen ears of corn, 350 pounds of potatoes, and over 200 whole fried chickens.ย

Guests dining at the church were treated to the traditional bluegrass and gospel country sounds of โ€œThe Unclouded Dayโ€ a musical ministry of Trinity UMC.ย  The band played for about two hours including a selection of old time gospel favorites and original compositions by band members.

All told, the supper generated a profit of about $6,000 that will be used to improve the kitchen facilities at Trinity UMC.ย  That kitchen in turn is used to host dinners such as this one, which raise money for the churchโ€™s many ministries in our community.
