Washington, DC – President Donald Trump delivered his first speech before a joint session of Congress Tuesday evening, Feb. 28. The presidentโ€™s address was not a โ€œState of the Unionโ€ message, which will be mandated in the subsequent years of his tenure in office.ย  Trump made healthcare and national defense the centerpieces of his address. He called for the replacement of the Affordable Care Act, stating, โ€œmandating every American buy government-approved health insurance never was the right solution for America.โ€

President Trump declared โ€œthe time for small thinking is over.โ€ In addition to increased military spending, the president advocated for a $1 trillion infrastructure package, funded as a public/private partnership.

Trump also asked Congress to work with him to create โ€œreal and positive immigration reform.โ€

In a statement released after the presidentโ€™s address, Maryland Congressman Steny H. Hoyer [D – MD District 5] said, โ€œeven as Americans across the country have demanded at town halls that their representatives protect the Affordable Care Act, President Trump announced tonight that he and Congressional Republicans will be moving full-steam ahead to take health coverage away from more than 30 million Americans and raise costs for tens of millions more.โ€
