St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Lefave responded to an interior intrusion alarm at the Checkers on Miramar Way in California on August 25th at 3:45 a.m.
Deputy Lefave approached the location on foot and observed two subject inside with masks over their faces. Additional sheriff’s office deputies and a Maryland state trooper arrived. The two men then exited the building through the drive-thru window and were approached by Dep. Lefave.
Dep. Lefave ordered the two to show their hands and stop. The two men fled and were detained by backup officers. The two were identified as James Daniel Short 20, of No Fixed Address and Charles Patrick Balsbaugh 28, of Valley Lee, Maryland.
Short and Balsbaugh were transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center and charged with Second Degree Burglary, Fourth Degree Burglary- Storehouse, Fourth Degree Burglary-Theft, Malicious Destruction of Property Over $1000, and Theft less than $100.00.
