According to documents on file with District Court for Calvert County, Brenda Kay Cook, 60 of Owings, has been charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder. The criminal charges were filed today by Det. Nicholas DeFelice of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office. A preliminary hearing on the charges has been tentatively scheduled for Nov. 26 in District Court.ย
Update from the Maryland State Fire Marshal on 10/29/2014 at 11:37 a.m.:
Investigators from the Maryland State Fire Marshalโs Office and the Calvert Investigative Team of the Calvert County Sheriffโs Office are currently investigating a fire that occurred around 4:15 pm on October 28, 2014. The fire occurred in a two story, single family dwelling located at 9100 Sam Owings Place in Owings of Calvert County. The investigation revealed the fire was incendiary in nature, and intentionally set by Brenda Cook (60). Further investigation revealed the dwelling was occupied by multiple people at the time of the fire. All occupants were able to escape the dwelling safely.
Firefighters from North Beach, Dunkirk, Huntingtown, Lothian and Harwood responded to the fire and extinguished the fire within 10 minutes. The fire caused an estimated $50,000 in damages to the dwelling.
At this time, the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending for Cook.

On Tuesday, Oct. 28 at approximately 4:18 pm, a call went out for a house fire on Sam Owings Place in Owings.
As the first unit arrived on scene, crews reported a working fire on the second level of the house. Sources at the scene stated one person was reportedly rescued from the house by the first arriving firefighter.
Fire was quickly brought under control by firefighters. The fire appears to have been confined to the second floor.
Police reported 5th Street in the area of Sam Owings Place was briefly closed.
The Maryland State Fire Marshalโs Office was contacted as was BGE.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
