UPDATE FROM CALVERT COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE, Wednesday morning, Jan. 7, 2014

On Jan. 6 at 12:13p.m., the Calvert Control Center received a 911 call from an individual advising that his mother was not taking her medication and that she had threatened to kill herself.ย

The caller continued stating he was following her travelling eastbound on Maryland Route 260 in the area of Jewell Road trying to get her to stop.ย  The caller said his mother was 70 years old and was operating a white Toyota Corolla and he was following her in a red Kia. The Corolla turned south onto Maryland Route 2 and continued to Maryland Rt. 4 southbound.ย

Deputy Durner located the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop south of Maryland Rt. 2 along Maryland Rt. 4.ย  The operator of the Corolla accelerated and Durner radioed that he was engaged in a pursuit.

Durner advised the vehicle was reaching speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour.
Trooper Follin was the closest unit to Durner and assisted with the pursuit by taking over communications with the Calvert Control Center.ย  As Follin was calling out speeds and locations of the suspect vehicle, deputies were setting up a means of stopping the fleeing vehicle before it got into the Prince Frederick Town Center which was heavily congested with midday traffic.ย

Just north of the crossover south of MF Bowen Road, the fleeing vehicle drove onto the shoulder to pass vehicles in the travel lane and crashed into a BMW SUV hitting it on the passengerโ€™s side.

The fleeing vehicle continued travelling up an embankment then down into the travel portion of southbound Maryland Route 2/4 before coming to rest.ย

Deputies approached the Corolla to check on the sole occupant but could not see inside of the vehicle due to the curtain airbags hanging that had been deployed during the collision.ย

The occupant began to try to crawl out of the driverโ€™s door window, which was littered with broken glass.ย  She was telling the deputies on the scene that they were going to have to shoot her. Deputies were able to keep her seated in the driverโ€™s seat until medical personnel arrived on the scene to tend to her.ย

The crash was extremely violent and both vehicles involved in the collision were destroyed.ย

The BMW was occupied by two Chesapeake Beach residents. The driver of the BMW was able to get out on her own. The front seat passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle by members of the Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Dept. and Rescue Squad. The operator of the fleeing vehicle also had to be extricated.ย

All of the occupants were transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital where they were treated for their injuries.ย

The operator of the fleeing vehicle was charged with numerous traffic violations, a request for reexamination of driver was completed and an emergency petition for a medical evaluation was done. ย Police have declined to release the driver’s name.

All traffic southbound Rt. 2/4 was diverted onto Plum Point Road with the assistance of the Maryland State Highway Administration until the roadway could be reopened.
