An Ambulance driver and patient were killed in an wreck on Rt. In Prince Frederick this morning, when their vehicle was rear-ended and thrown into oncoming traffic.
Maryland State police and Calvert County Sheriffโs officers responded.
Police say Albert Reigle, Jr., 39, of Waldorfย was operating a vehicle southbound Rt. 4, near German Chapel Road in Prince Frederick, when he struck the rear of a 1993 Ford Astrovan owned by AAA Ambulance Service of Upper Marlboro.
The collision caused the Ford Astrovan to go into a spin and cross the median strip into northbound traffic
A pickup truck traveling northbound operated by Joseph DeBay, 45, of St. Leonard, then struck the Astrovan broadside. The van came to rest in the northbound lane and caught fire.
The Natala Rose Lowery, 25, of North Beach, an employee of AAA Ambulance, was pronounced dead on the scene. A patient inside the van, Theresa Gant, 51, of White Sands, was also pronounced dead.
A vehicle traveling northbound driven by Sandra Gott, 25, of St. Leonard was struck by the Astrovan while it was spinning.
Reigle was transported to P.G. County Shock Trauma Center in Cheverly, where he was treated and is being held for observation.
The driver of the pickup truck, DeBay, was taken to Calvert Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. There were no other injuries.
The accident is being investigated by the Calvert County Crash Reconstruction Team.
Police on the scene told a Bay Net photographer the at-fault vehicle was involved in two “hit and run” collisions further north in Prince Frederick prior toย the fatal accident. According to one responder police were pursuing the vehicle when it ran into the back of the ambulance, and the investigation is now a criminal one.
