Prince Frederick, MD – A late-morning house fire in Calvert County Friday, Dec. 9 caused heavy damage to a home and displaced a family, state investigators reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the blaze on Cassell Boulevard in Prince Frederick was discovered by juvenile occupants of the two-story, split-foyer, wood-framed house shortly after 11 a.m.

“The fire was the result of a lit candle left unattended on a nightstand,” a deputy state fire marshal stated in a report.  “The family was displaced and [they] are being assisted by the American Red Cross, as well as family members.”

The fire originated in a basement bedroom. Forty firefighters responded to the one-alarm blaze and brought the flames under control in 40 minutes. No injuries were reported. Damage to the home and contents is estimated at $250,000.

Update – Reported at 12:31 p.m. – The roadway has been cleared and traffic can move freely.

Emergency response vehicles are on the scene at this time.
