UPDATE at 11:50 a.m.

Benedict, MD – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) reported a mechanical malfunction during routine maintenance of the Benedict Bridge–which spans the Patuxent River, and connects Calvert and Charles counties in Route 231–forced the temporary closure of the bridge.

“Crews were performing routine maintenance at the time,” said SHA spokesman Charlie Gischlar, who added the closure started at around 11 a.m. and lasted about 43 minutes.

The steel beam bridge includes a swing span and was constructed during the early 1950s. Over 12,000 vehicles cross the bridge on a daily basis.
