Washington, DC โ€“ According to U.S. Department of Defense and the White House, the United States blasted a Syrian air base with a barrage of cruise missiles Thursday night, April 6 in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack against civilians earlier this week. President Donald Trump stated the retaliation was necessary to deter future use of poison gas. The president called other nations to join the U.S. in opposing the action taken by Syrian authorities.

News services quoted Trump, who spoke from his Florida residence, as declaring, โ€œAssad [Syrian President Bashar Assad] choked out the lives of innocent men, women and children.โ€

Reports stated the strikes hit the Syrian-government-controlled Shayrat air base in countryโ€™s central region.ย ย  The U.S. missiles hit at 8:45 p.m. in Washington, 3:45 a.m. Friday morning in Syria.
