At 2:33 p.m. Oct. 26, the Charles County Sheriffโs Office Narcotics Section received a tip that Rico Demont Nelson, 26, of La Plata, who was wanted for numerous outstanding warrants, was traveling in a gray Mercury Grand Marquis in the Wakefield area of Waldorf.
Detectives found the vehicle traveling north on Leonardtown Road and verified Nelson was in the vehicle with another man.
As they continued onto northbound Crain Highway, the detectives received assistance from patrol officers, who attempted to stop the vehicle.
The Mercury pulled into a parking lot near the intersection as if it was going to stop but then it drove through the grassy area and entered another parking where it jumped several curbs, damaging the passenger side tires.
The vehicle continued north on Crain Highway and stopped next to Waldorf Toyota, where Nelson exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Nelson pointed an object that appeared to be a handgun at the employees of Waldorf Toyota and threatened them.
Officers apprehended and arrested Nelson after a short chase and found a quantity of crack cocaine in the area he ran through.
He was charged with possession with the intent to distribute cocaine and first degree assault and was served the warrants.
The driver of the Mercury, Travis Roy Thompson, 25, of Lexington Park, was arrested and charged with numerous traffic violations.
Nelson and Thompson were being held in the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before the district court commissioner. Det. J. Burroughs and Officer S. Stanley investigated.
