Melissa Sue Johnson
Barstow, MD – A Calvert woman serving weekends in the local detention center is facing drug possession charges after she was found in unlawful possession of a Schedule IV drug, police reported.
The inmate—identified as Melissa Sue Johnson, 33 of Lusby—was being processed Friday, Jan. 29 prior to serving time in the Calvert County Detention Center for traffic charges. “While Johnson was being processed she was observed ‘nodding off’ at the counter and she was having difficulty standing,” Dfc. C. Childress stated in documents on file in District Court for Calvert County. A correctional officer “searched Johnson’s purse and located one white pill, suspected Alprazolam, inside the purse.” Childress stated that Johnson told the correctional officer the pill belonged to her (Johnson’s) boyfriend.
Johnson was serving a 60-day sentence after pleading guilty to driving a vehicle while so far impaired by drugs she could not safely drive.
Johnson was charged with controlled dangerous substance (CDS) possession and possessing/receiving CDS while detained. The charges have a combined maximum penalty of seven years in jail and $26,000 in fines. A hearing on the Jan. 29 drug charges is tentatively scheduled for April 27 in District Court.
