La Plata, MD – One of three defendants who participated in a 2014 burglary of a home on Bensville Road in Waldorf accepted a plea bargain and will stay out of jail as long as she pays restitution.

Karla Veronica Brizuela, 22 of New Carrolton, pled guilty to conspiracy to commit first-degree burglary Friday, Feb. 5 before Charles County Circuit Court Judge H. James West in La Plata.

Charles County Assistant Stateโ€™s Attorney Francis Granados said Brizuela drove codefendants Matthews Leroy Carter and Davon Forrest to the 6000 block of Bensville Road Dec. 2, 2014.

Granados stated that Carter and Forrest kicked in the rear door of the residence and proceeded to pilfer the home of $32,476 worth of U.S. currency, a wide screen television, an iPod and a vehicle.

Police got a break in the case Dec. 4 when they were contacted by Arlington County, VA Police Dec. 4.

Officers there received a report of a suspicious person and arrested Carter after they found the iPod and other property related to the Bensville Road theft in his possession.

Carter was read his Miranda rights and admitted participating in the Dec. 2 burglary in Waldorf. He also implicated Forest and told Charles County Sheriffโ€™s Office investigators that Brizuela drove them to the house.

Brizuela was stopped by police at Mattawoman Drive in 2015 and asked if she would come to Station 3 in Waldorf. During that interview, she admitted driving the two men to the Bensville Road location and dropped them off there.

โ€œShe told the detectives that she had only done this one time,โ€ Granados said.

West told Brizuela that under the plea agreement, she would face 364 days of active incarceration with no probation, but will have 20 years hanging over her head if she didnโ€™t continue to make good faith payments toward $2,500 in restitution.

โ€œAs long as youโ€™re holding up your end of the deal,โ€ the judge said, โ€œthe state has agreed to keep continuing sentencing out until restitution is paid in full.โ€

West warned that if that doesnโ€™t happen, she would face the year minus one day sentence, and reminded her that that there are 20 years of backup time hanging over her head as well if she fails to obey all laws.
