Leonardtown, MD – On Feb. 1, Corporal Margaret Smolarsky responded to the 40000 block of Merchants Lane (Family Dollar) in Leonardtown, for the report of a theft in progress.
The suspect, Stacey Ann Murphy, 29, of Mechanicsville, was observed concealing merchandise and attempting to leave the store without paying.ย
According to charging documents, ” The store manager told me the defendant was in the store earlier in the day at approximatelyย 10 a.m., and purchased three small acrylic picture frames. The defendant admitted to the manager she stole merchandise both times and also admitted that to me (Smolarsky).”
“She (Murphy) took us to her vehicle where she opened the hatch (of the vehicle). There were numerous pieces of merchandise laying in the hatch area,” according to charging documents.
“Several other pieces of merchandise were still in the cart which the defendant had not had time to steal before getting caught. The merchandiseย the defendant stole includedย several men’s pants, shorts and shirts, approximately 10 bras, 16 ladies underwear, ladies’ pants and shirts,” according to charging documents.ย
She was placed under arrest and transported to the St. Maryโs County Detention Center.Murphy was charged with two counts of theft less than $1,000 and theft scheme less than $1,000.
Murphy at this time does not have a court date scheduled. Murphy faces a maximum jail sentence of four years and six months and or a maximum fine of $1,500.ย
