
Owings, MD – In the world of marching band, competition season is in full swing. On Saturday, Sept. 19, several local schools competed at Northern High School. In all, a total of 13 schools competed, and Northern took an exhibition at this event. An exhibition means that they performed but received a separate score as the host band.
The Group 1 A class Perryville High School started the event off with their Star Trek themed show. They played songs from the original series of Star Trek, and walked out of the night with a score of 73.825. In the 2A class, Patuxent, Leonardtown, Calvert, and Old Mill competed against each other. Calvert started with a planetary theme, followed by Old Mill with a fairy tale based program. Patuxent went after with their show that symbolizes fear vs courage. Leonardtown finished off with a clock building themed show. For scores between the four schools, Old Mill took fourth with a score of 67.7, Calvert came in 3rd with a score of 68.45, Patuxent took second with a score of 73.45, and Leonardtown came away with a victory with a score of 74.4.
In the 3A class, Perry Hall provided a very entertaining show about the geometric oddity that is the circle. They tugged at the audienceโs emotions with pieces of comedy, and groovy bass lines kept them bobbing their heads.ย They took a score of 71.15 back with them to their hometown. The 4A class had Atholton, South River, and Marriots Ridge on the field. They finished with South River in 3rd, Atholton in 2nd, and Marriots Ridge in 1st with a score of 79.55.
In the Group 1 Open Class, La Plata provided a show based on the Rock Group Styx, where the entire band became the drumline at one point in the show. This was an entertaining show as well. They scored 71.925. In the Group 3 Open Class, Century had a weather based show on how the sun rules everything in the spring. They had a good score of 75.02, but lost to Chopticon who had an Illuminati based show, and rocked it. They came out in black cloaks, and played mysterious themed music. They came out with a score of 77.976.
Lastly, in the Group 2 Open Class, Great Mills came away with a score of 70.775 on their show about Day becoming Night.
