PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Eight of Calvert County’s public schools will get an upgrade on their gymnasium locker room door hardware in a project approved by the Board of Education (BOE) at the Dec. 15 meeting.
A representative for the school said that gymnasium locker rooms are often used for shelter-in-place locations for potential incidents. Safety advocates at the schools recommended this upgrade. The updates will allow instructors to lock the locker room doors from the inside, just like a classroom door, which is currently not possible in these eight schools.
The schools included are all the Calvert County middle schools and high schools, with the exception of Northern High School, which already has gymnasium locker room doors capable of locking from the inside.
The project was awarded to Scheibel Construction for $80,000. The funding for the project will be through the School Security Grant Program, Aging Schools Program and Capital Outlay Alterations.
The decision comes amid additional security measures in schools, such as Calvert County’s push to have a dedicated school resource officer at each school. Calvert County has emergency plans that parents and guardians can read about online, and comprehensive anti-bullying policies.
