Corionte Eric Claggett
Prince Frederick, MD ย – A Calvert County grand jury has indicted a Prince Frederick teen for his role in an incident that occurred in June. A teenager was shot during an altercation that occurred during the late afternoon hours of June 13 in the Sheridan Point Road and Chinquapin Ridge Court area of Prince Frederick. The suspectโidentified in police reports and court records as Corionte Eric Claggett, 18, was indicted on five countsโincluding armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and second-degree assault.
The alleged gunman was identified as Donavon Stephen Harrod, 21 of Prince Frederick. A hearing on the charges Harrod currently faces is tentatively scheduled for mid-August in District Court. An unidentified juvenile was also apprehended after the incident.
According to documents on file in District Court, when interviewed by police, Claggett initially claimed that two white males in a purple vehicle had shot the teen. However, by that time Harrod had already turned himself in at the Maryland State Police Barracks in Prince Frederick. Claggett subsequently admitted that he was at the Sheridan Point Road location with two juveniles for a transaction involving a quarter pound of marijuana. Claggett and the two juveniles intended to purchase the quantity from Harrod for approximately $900.
Detective Wayne Wells of the Calvert County Sheriffโs Office stated in court documents that Harrod drove to the Sheridan Point Road location where an unidentified male got into the passenger side of his vehicle and instructed him to drive a short distance on a gravel driveway. According to Wells, Harrod said two other males emerged from a wooded area. One of the males was โwearing a black jacket, hooded style, pointing a black handgun at him demanding he get out of the vehicle. Harrod stated that the male subject put the gun to his neck and he heard a clicking sound like it was being fired, but nothing happened.โ
The weapon Claggett was reportedly brandishing during the incident was later determined to be a pellet gun. When Claggett and the two juveniles realized Harrod could identify him, they began running. Wells stated Harrod then retrieved a .45 caliber ACP Highpoint Carbine from his vehicle and fired shots at the fleeing teens. โHarrod stated he heard someone scream and he know he may have shot someone,โ Wells stated. Harrod then fled the scene, disposed of the weaponโwhich was later recoveredโand drove to his brotherโs home in Lusby. Harrodโs brother convinced him to turn himself into police.
Meanwhile, Claggett attempted to put the wounded teen in his (Claggettโs) sport utility vehicle and drive him to the hospital but was unsuccessful. He then called 911. The wounded teen was flown to a trauma center with serious injuries. Court documents do not identify either juvenile involved in the incident.
A court docket summary stated that Claggettโs attorney is Larry D. Lamson. The defendantโs next court appearance is a pretrial hearing tentatively scheduled for Sept. 12.
