PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and shelters all over the country are working to raise awareness and find new homes for the pups currently in their care. Several of Calvert County’s own shelter dogs have their adoption fees sponsored this month to help them find their families.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) sponsors this yearly month of recognition. According to the ASPCA, more than 5 million companion pets entered shelters last year — each of them filled with unlimited potential to be a great addition to a family.

Calvert County’s Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter is an open-admission shelter that receives and cares for owner-surrendered and stray animals in the county. The shelter participates in numerous initiatives throughout the year, including the monthly adoption series on YouTube, Live at Linda’s, and by bringing animals to attend events around the county.

The typical adoption fee for dogs is $75. Several dogs at the shelter have their fees sponsored by donors for the duration of October to celebrate this month and, hopefully, improve their chances of finding a home.

Meet some of the dogs below and reach out to the shelter to learn more. And if your perfect companion isn’t on this list, they may be waiting just behind the shelter’s doors.

Note: This may not be a complete list and is subject to change. Contact the shelter for the most up-to-date information.

Archie

Archie is a 3-year-old male. His website bio says: Archie is a sweet, bouncy boy who’s always ready for fun! This energetic guy LOVES toys — especially tennis balls — and would happily play fetch all day long. He’s friendly with kids and other animals, though his playful side means he sometimes chases after them (all in good fun!).

Archie is crate trained, housebroken, and looking for an active home that can keep up with his happy energy. With a little patience as he settles in, Archie promises to be the best adventure buddy and cuddle companion you could ask for.

Braxton

Braxton is a 4-year-old male. The shelter writes: This 4-year-old cutie is sweet, smart, and full of tail wags! He’s always ready to play with toys, soak up attention, and show off his cool tricks — sit, stay, shake, and even roll over!

Kyle

Kyle is a 5-year-old male. According to the shelter, Kyle is “your future workout buddy.”

At about 5 years old, Kyle is a sweet, goofy guy with energy to spare and love to give! He’s got the basics down (sit, stay, down), but he’s still working on not showing his excitement by turning into a pogo stick.

Meatball

Meatball is a 2-year-old male the shelter describes as “the pup that’s al dente with love!” He’s full of zest, a little saucy, and always ready to roll his way into your heart. Meatball is on the lookout for his forever home (and cuddle partner) — could it be you?

Unique

The shelter describes this 3-year-old female as “sweet and spunky.” She’s ready to find her forever home with someone who can keep up with her zest for life! She’s full of love, energy, and tail wags — and would thrive with an active adopter who can match her playful spirit.

Yaya

The shelter invites you to say “Yaya!” to your new best friend. This 2-year-old energetic female is full of zest for life and can’t wait to jump (literally!) into her forever home. She may pull a little on walks, but with some leash practice and the right gear, she’ll be strutting her stuff like a pro in no time.

If you’re looking for a playful, loving pup who’s equal parts brains and energy, say “Yaya!” to forever love — trust us, you’ll be shouting “Yay-YA!” the moment she joins your family!
