CHARLES COUNTY, Md. – On January 23, 2024, staff members from the Maryland Center for Computing Education met with members of Charles County Public Schools to discuss how artificial intelligence could be utilized to improve student education.

In recent years, generative AI, which possesses the ability to develop text or images based on information that is provided to it by the user, has grown dramatically in usability and popularity. Well-known examples of generative AI include ChatGPT and DALL-E.

AI has several potential uses for students, including assistance in brainstorming ideas, developing more concise text, and assistance with math problems.

โ€œThe stakes for AI education are higher than the internet when it came out,โ€ claimed Caleb Wilson, the District Coach of Instructional Technology and Innovation at Worcester County Public Schools.

Despite AI progression and the push for its use in education, only five states (California, Oregon, West Virginia, North Carolina, and Washington) have adopted guidelines for AI use in educational endeavors.

While the presentation encouraged the use of generative AI in studentโ€™s education, it also warned of potential flaws and limitations in AI.

AI can make things up depending on how it gathers information from the web. Internet bias can interfere with its ability to provide accurate solutions despite its attempts to filter out misleading info.
