WILMINGTON, Del. — A private rail company says it’s ready to wipe out Amtrak’s $2.4 billion debt on the NextGen Acela fleet — and transform the Northeast Corridor with family-friendly cars, free onboard entertainment and massage-chair seats in First Class, all on trains that will run from Boston to Washington, D.C.
AmeriStarRail, based in Delaware, is proposing to partner with Amtrak to rebrand the new Acela trainsets as the “Libertyliner 250,” calling it the largest private-sector investment in Amtrak’s history. The company aims to launch the revamped service by May 2026, more than a year ahead of schedule, in time for the America 250 celebrations and the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The Libertyliner 250 would bring nonstop New York–Washington trips in 1 hour, 59 minutes, and add high-speed stops at Bridgeport, Conn., and Trenton, N.J., while maintaining half-hourly departures between New York, Newark, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

Triple-Class Trains For Every Rider
The Libertyliner 250 would replace Amtrak’s aging Amfleet cars with standardized high-speed trains running Coach, Business and First Class on every trip.
A highlight is the Family Coach, which would offer a “Kids Ride Free” program — one lap child free per adult or senior-citizen ticket, plus up to two seated children under 18 at no charge if seats are available. The car would include a children’s play zone and a toddler-friendly restroom, designed to make high-speed travel more accessible to families who now rely on slower regional trains.
All passengers would have free movies, TV and music, a café-car lounge with a water-bottle filling station, and bike spaces by reservation for a fee.

Upgraded Comfort For Business And First Class
Business Class would include Metropolitan Lounge access, free shoeshine service, at-seat café service, cloth headrests, travel neck pillows and an onboard conference room by reservation.
First Class would add a quiet-section cabin, massage-chair pads at every seat, complimentary meals and beverages at-seat, onboard and lounge massage services, and door-to-door baggage service with two free checked bags.
Aiming To Be The ‘Best In The World’
AmeriStarRail says private financing would fund these upgrades in partnership with Alstom, the train manufacturer, allowing all 28 Libertyliner trainsets to be in service by May 2026.
Chief Operating Officer Scott R. Spencer said the Libertyliner 250 may not be the fastest train in the world, but it aims to be “the best rail passenger service in the world” by combining speed with comfort and reliability.
The proposal, dated Oct. 7, 2025, was sent by Spencer to Amtrak President Roger Harris as part of AmeriStarRail’s formal pitch to rebrand and expand Amtrak’s high-speed Acela fleet.
