SOUTHERN MARYLAND — Public and nonprofit groups across Southern Maryland are encouraged to apply to host local meal sites as part of the SUN Meals program. This federally funded, state-administered initiative provides free summer meals to children and teens when school is out.

Formerly known as the Summer Food Service Program, SUN Meals ensures that all children 18 and under have access to healthy meals at no cost, regardless of income. Sites operate in neighborhoods, schools, parks, libraries, churches, and other community hubs across Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s counties.

In 2024, more than 1,500 SUN Meals sites operated across Maryland, serving millions of meals during the summer.

How it works:

  • No registration or ID is required for children to receive meals.
  • Meals are available on-site at designated times.
  • Some rural communities may also qualify for SUN Meals To-Go and SUN Bucks, a grocery benefit for eligible families.

Organizations interested in applying to operate a SUN Meals site, under a sponsoring entity, must ensure that all meals meet USDA nutrition standards. Sponsoring entities include school districts and approved nonprofits.

The deadline to apply for summer 2025 is Sunday, June 15.
