Last Day for Calvert Students is June 14;
Teachers Seek April 30 Contract Agreement
The last of school for Calvert County students will be June 14 — June 10 for pre-kindergarten — two days earlier than originally scheduled. Teachers will end the year in June 15. The school calendar originally allowed for five days of inclement weather closings, but winter ended with only three days of snow cancellation.
The change was approved at the Thursday, April 14 Board of Education meeting. Schools will open again for students Aug. 24 (Aug. 18 for teachers).
At the same meeting, Calvert Education Association President Debbie Russ outlined the teachers organization’s contract proposal for the next school year, and called on the school board to have its negotiating team “commit to an April 30 resolution date” for an agreement.
In a statement during the “Public Forum” portion of the meeting, Russ said it is “in the best interests of those teachers facing layoffs and for the morale of the teaching and support staffs of CCPS (Calvert County Public Schools) to achieve a reasonable and equitable solution by April 30.”
