CALVERT COUNTY, Md. — The Arts Council of Calvert County is sounding the last call for any local artists who want to submit an application for a public mural project at the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons. The deadline is Sunday, July 6, at 11:59 p.m.

The outdoor mural is 128 square feet and will be painted on four panels that measure 8 feet by 4 feet. It will be installed as a 4-foot-high by 32-foot-long mural on the wooden boat shed. The mural is intended to highlight the history of Calvert County through “figurative representation,” and is partially funded by a Maryland 250 Inclusive History Grant.

The council aims to include public input in the design they select, and interested artists can view those guidelines and feedback before submitting their design. The link also contains photos, art and other inspiration from around the community.

Artists can also access the full call-for-artists document to get insight on the project’s timeline and specifications. For example, the mural must last 10 years, be appropriate for all ages and be weather-resistant.

The Arts Council will select three finalists by July 11 to produce renderings of their designs for consideration. Each finalist will receive a $400 stipend to submit their sketches by Aug. 11. The selected artist will be chosen on Aug. 15.

The project budget is $3,200, which will include artist fees, paint and materials, fabrication, onsite installation and travel.

This mural is the county’s only current call for artists, but the Arts Council recently celebrated its part in the public arts project at the Dunkirk District Park skate park and maintains a calendar of arts-related events.
