Red Light Crash Statistics
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), red light crashes killed 8,000 people and injured approximately 2.3 million more from 2008 to 2018. These numbers are staggering, and they emphasize the need to observe traffic lights at all times.
Other alarming red-light crash statistics include:
• An average of two people die each day in the United States, and 50,000 are injured due to red-light running.
• You are more likely to be injured in a red-light collision than any other type of car accident.
• Half of the people killed in a red traffic signal accident are not the actual signal violators. They are passengers, other motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
• Running a red light is the most common cause of urban crashes.
Top Causes of Red-Light Collisions
Traffic accidents are often caused by some form of driver error, and it’s the same in the case of red-light collisions. The most common causes of red-light accidents are:
• Distracted driving: Distracted driving – texting, talking on the phone, or any other activity that takes a driver’s attention away from the road – is one of the most common causes of an accident, especially one at a traffic light.
• Speeding: Going too fast, especially in busy intersections, gives drivers less time to react when the light turns red.
• Intoxication: Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol slows drivers’ reaction times and impairs their judgment.
• Reckless driving: Disregarding traffic signals, weaving in and out of lanes, and tailgating can cause serious accidents.
Whatever the reason, it’s important to understand that running a red light is against the law and puts everyone on the road at risk.
Red Light Ticket, Points, Penalties and Fines in Maryland
• If no accident is involved, Failure to Stop at a Red Light carries 2 points and a $140.00 fine.
• However, if an accident is involved it is 3 points and a $180.00 fine.
• Keep in mind accumulating too many points can lead to license suspension.
• There are also circumstances where running a red light can also end up in a reckless driving conviction.

Speed cameras and red light cameras are required due the dangerous way people operate vehicles in Maryland
Speed cameras need to be placed every 1/8 mile mark on all roads
Anyone that disagrees is part of the problem
People who insist on binary solutions are the source of many problems in American society. “Agree with me 100% or you are my enemy”. Did it ever occur to you that that the world is full of complex systems and you can’t forsee every unintended consequence? Resist the urge to be a narcissist and tyrant.
Here’s a red light runner and speeder folks, you can thank dark horse for your high insurance rates
Wow. Your brilliance is simply amazing.
Thank you, it’s more common sense than brilliance though
Every morning I witness red light runners at the intersection of Maple and 235 at least 90% of the time. I’m in favor of red light cameras to fine these people.
Good luck with all the idiots on the road
Red light cameras don’t reduce the number of accidents, they just shift the types (less T-bones, more rear-enders). Technology is not the solution, people are.
Another issue with the AG not enforcing laws. They won’t prosecute the offenders that break the laws when a reckless driving charge is before them. They say they have bigger eggs to fry. I think if you make the speeding and tailgating fines large enough and issue them it will eventually change people’s attitudes. Drive the posted speed limit and maintain the one vehicle distance for every 10 MPH.
Incorrect, they can either stop, or open up their wallets, eventually they will obey the traffic laws
So what is it, 50,000 a day injured (18 million + a year) or only 2.8 million since 2008? I just love scare statistics…
