WASHINGTON — Families across Southern Maryland are urged to check their children’s and adult bicycle helmets after Bell Sports issued a major recall of more than 31,000 helmets sold nationwide. Helmets were sold on Amazon and at local Walmart and Target stores.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that the recalled helmets fail to meet required impact protection standards, making them unsafe for both children and adults.
The CPSC safety recall states that these helmets may not adequately protect users from head injuries in the event of a crash, violating the federal bicycle helmet safety standard. No injuries have been reported as of the recall date.
The affected helmets were sold from September 2024 to May 2025 at Walmart, Target, Academy Sports + Outdoors, and online through Amazon, FredMeyer.com, Target.com and Academy.com, retailing for around $20.
Consumers should immediately stop using the helmets, cut off the straps and send a photo of the damaged product to consumersupport-bell@bellhelmets.com to receive a full refund. Bell Sports is also contacting all known purchasers directly.
