Benedict Drawbridge Operator Found Deceased, No Foul Play Suspected

BENEDICT, Md. – On the evening of December 2, 2023, a wellness check at the Benedict Bridge led to a tragic discovery. Maryland State Police troopers from the Prince Frederick Barrack responded to the scene shortly after 7:30 p.m., where they found drawbridge operator John Roper, 77, of California, Maryland, deceased.

Authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected in this case.

For the investigation, the Benedict Bridge was temporarily closed for approximately 3 hours. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration also assisted with the road closure.

The case remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

  1. He was loved by my sons He was their uncle. When they were little he watched three stooges with them snf they would laugh till they had tears. He loved collecting vinal records. He was a gentle soft hearted soul. He was my brother and will be missed
