NAPOLI PIZZERIA RECEIVED several nominations for inclusion in the Best of Waldorf series.  The restaurant has been a fixture in Waldorf culture since 1978; although the original Italian owners sold the restaurant to Pete Skaltsis in 1993.  They left him the care of their faithful customers and a few of their authentic Italian recipes.

My arrival at Napoli was after the lunch rush.  A few lunch customers still sat munching, lingering over their personal Napoli’s favorites.  A waitress approached me immediately and within moments Mr. Skaltsis made my acquaintance.

Nearby tattoo shop owner, and Best of Waldorf series member, Matthew Kiley of Tastypain Tattoo stopped in to grab some lunch.  When I asked him how he liked the food, he grinned and said, “The best Italian food in town!”

Waldorf has grown by leaps and bounds since Mr. Skaltsis began his reign at Napoli and plenty of other eating establishments have been added along and near Crain Hwy/Route 301.  But Mr. Skaltsis feels all the competition hasn’t hurt his business at all.  The flow of customers into Napoli’s is steady according to Mr. Skaltsis.  

In his Greek accent he tells me, “The same customers come all the time, they feel like home.  [But], every day we see new faces coming in.”  It seems the steady customers stay and when new ones come in, they stay too.  Napoli Pizzeria apparently has a dedicated clientele.

The food is homemade.  The thick Sicilian pizza crust has plenty of toppings; or, if you are a thin-crust fan, try the Napolitan.  They also serve traditional Greek foods like moussaka and souvlaki from Mr. Skaltsis’ own recipes.  Napoli’s has plenty of choices; the simple green paper menu is packed on both sides.  You can even top off your dinner with a choice of Italian or Greek desert; but, the only deserts on the menu are baklava and canoli.

The place even boasts an original Pac Man machine.  So, grab a slice and drop some quarters, old-school.
