SOLOMONS, Maryland — COVID-19 can’t stop the annual Solomons Christmas Walk and Lighted Boat Parade. However, the Solomons Business Association (SBA) and Solomons Island Yacht Club (SIYC) have worked together to make sure everyone can celebrate safely.ย

At 6 pm on Saturday, December 5, boats decked in Christmas lights and decorations will make their way from the SIYC and ending along the Riverwalk around 7:15 p.m.

Anthony Baratta, the Fleet Captain of the SIYC, said the best views are from the Pier and Kingfisherโ€™s restaurant. Baratta noted that while outside events are much safer, he reminded people to take precautions. “Wear a face mask and maintain distance. The risk is much lower, but still has holiday spirit.โ€

SIYC member, Larry Rich has participated in the boat parade for over 20 years. He’s glad the event is still happening.ย โ€œPeople love it…and they can actually stay in their cars to watch it.โ€

Changes For Safety

Some of the annual Christmas Walk events have been cancelled or changed to ensure public safety. Events usually draw crowds of 10,000 people in a weekend.ย

SBA President Vandy Young explained, “This year due to the coronavirus, we will be celebrating Christmas Walk as a month-long event and a little differently.”

For example, Friday’s tree lighting went on as usual but with a few changes. There was not visit from Santa and Boy Scouts did not place their usual luminaries.

But not to worry, kids will still have the chance to let communicate with the jolly old elf. Santa’s mailbox is in the gazebo and ready to receive their letters.
