ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — Middle school students from across Southern Maryland will put their knowledge of civics to the test at the 2026 National Civics Bee® local competition on Saturday, March 28, hosted at St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s Cole Cinema.

The event, organized by the St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce in partnership with The Civic Trust™ of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, brings the nationwide civics competition to local students in grades 6 through 8.

“We believe informed and active citizens make for a strong country, a strong economy, and a strong workforce,” said chamber officials, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to promoting civic knowledge and community engagement among youth.

The Bee challenges students to think critically about civic issues and apply their understanding of American government and community improvement in a multi-stage competition. Students first submitted essays proposing solutions to local challenges, which were reviewed by community leaders. From those submissions, the top 20 finalists have been invited to participate in a live quiz and presentation round beginning at 10 a.m. March 28.

Prizes will be awarded to the leading competitors, with the top three finishers advancing to compete at the Maryland State Finals later this spring. First-place local winners will receive cash awards, including at least $500 for first place.

The National Civics Bee encourages students to engage respectfully and constructively in their communities while building a deeper understanding of democratic principles. Final winners from local competitions across the country will have the opportunity to compete in the National Championship in Washington, D.C., in fall 2026.

The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and the program begins at 10 a.m. at Cole Cinema on the St. Mary’s College of Maryland campus.
