WASHINGTON, D.C. — Metro commuters and families in Southern Maryland who use Branch Avenue to travel into Washington, D.C., should plan ahead for major service changes this August as the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) begins Phase 2 of its summer 2025 Green Line construction project.
Beginning Saturday, Aug. 2, through Sunday, Aug. 31, 2025, Branch Avenue, Suitland and Naylor Road stations will be closed. These Metro stations serve as key transit hubs for commuters from Prince George’s and Charles counties. Branch Avenue, an end-of-line station serving Southern Maryland commuters, is expected to see the greatest impact during the project.

From Saturday, Aug. 2, through Sunday, Aug. 31, the following Green Line stations will be closed for construction:
- Branch Avenue
- Suitland
- Naylor Road
On weekends Aug. 9–10 and Aug. 16–17, closures extend northward to include Southern Avenue and Congress Heights stations.

Shuttle Alternatives
During the August shutdown, Metro will offer two types of free shuttle bus service to assist riders:
- Local Shuttle – Provides service between Branch Avenue, Suitland, Naylor Road and Southern Avenue stations. Buses will run every 8 to 10 minutes.
- Express Shuttle – Offers a direct connection between Branch Avenue and Southern Avenue, also running every 8 to 10 minutes.
To assist commuters during the closure, free shuttle bus service will operate between the closed stations and nearby open stations. All shuttles are ADA-accessible and designed to align with train service schedules to reduce transfer times and delays.
Parking will also be free at Branch Avenue, Suitland and Naylor Road throughout the shutdown, according to WMATA.
Rider Guidance
Shuttle service includes both local and express routes that align with train schedules. Riders should plan for extra travel time, potential crowding and may consider alternative options such as Metrobus or MARC for reaching Greenbelt from Southern Maryland.

Planned Construction Work
The Green Line project includes major upgrades intended to improve safety, communications and ride quality systemwide. According to WMATA, the following work will be completed during the closure:
- Station lighting repairs to improve visibility and customer safety
- Signage updates for clearer navigation
- Structural repairs to elevated track sections and bridges
- Installation of 102,000 linear feet of radio and fiber optic cable to enhance communication and train control systems
- Track improvements, including rail renewal, fastener and tie replacement, ballast tamping and grout pad upgrades for smoother service
- Installation of new platform edge lighting to alert customers of approaching trains
These upgrades are part of WMATA’s larger Summer 2025 infrastructure improvement plan.
