HUGHESVILLE, Md., โ€” A fast-moving brush fire in Hughesville brought out a full multi-unit response Sunday afternoon after residents reported flames and heavy smoke moving through a wooded area near 14220 Oaks Road.

The fire was first reported at 4:05 p.m. on March 30 by residents on nearby Enchanted Place, who stated they could see flames and smoke spreading rapidly through the woods. One caller noted โ€œa lot of smoke and fire coming through the treesโ€ and was unsure of the source.

Firefighters arrived to find active flames moving through approximately 2+ acres of brush and woods. Crews from multiple agencies, including brush and tanker units from Calvert and Charles counties, were assigned to contain the fire.

Command was established with teams accessing the area from both Oaks Road and Bell Ridge. Crews utilized dry hydrants and coordinated tanker shuttle operations to ensure a consistent water supply due to the rural location.

By late afternoon, crews reported progress in containing the fire. There were no reports of injuries or threats to structures, though visibility in the area was affected for some time due to smoke.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
