BRYANS ROAD, Md. — A Bryans Road woman is facing felony assault charges after authorities allege she struck and dragged a man with her vehicle during a confrontation in Charles County.
Ami Elizabeth Clagett, 52, of Bryans Road, is charged with first-degree assault and second-degree assault in connection with the Feb. 18, 2026 incident, according to court documents.
Deputies responded at approximately 3:49 p.m. to the area of Route 210 and Newman Spruell Place for a report of a pedestrian involved in a motor vehicle incident. Multiple witnesses reported that a man had been hit and dragged by a vehicle.
Investigators determined that Clagett and the man were involved in an encounter in a parking lot near the intersection. According to charging documents, the man returned the vehicle’s title to Clagett and was standing near the driver’s side door when Clagett entered the vehicle.
Authorities allege Clagett shifted the vehicle into reverse and began to drive, striking the man with the open driver’s side door. The vehicle then continued moving forward, causing the man to be dragged from the parking lot onto Route 210 and into oncoming traffic before he was able to free himself.
Video evidence reviewed by investigators reportedly shows the vehicle reversing with the door open while the man stood nearby. Additional footage allegedly shows the vehicle driving away as the man was dragged along Route 210.
Emergency medical personnel treated the man at the scene. The extent of his injuries was not detailed in court records.
Clagett was arrested and initially held without bond following her Feb. 18 arrest. A bail review hearing was held Feb. 19 before Judge Patrick J. Devine in Charles County District Court, where she was released on her own recognizance.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 17, 2026, in Charles County District Court.
The case remains pending in Circuit Court due to the felony first-degree assault charge.
