CALIFORNIA, Md. — A man was flown to a trauma center Saturday morning after suffering second-degree burns in a vehicle fire near the intersection of Patuxent Boulevard and Patuxent Beach Road in California, Maryland.
Emergency crews were dispatched around 10:54 a.m. for reports of a working vehicle fire. Initial updates from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office noted that the incident was not a motor vehicle collision, but instead a fire that left one male patient with burns to his hands and face.
Due to the severity of the injuries, a medevac helicopter was requested. Trooper 2 met ground EMS at a nearby hangar to airlift the patient. Officials reportedly designated the burn trauma as a Priority 2 case.
While authorities initially advised the public to avoid the area due to traffic backups, the scene was stabilized and detours lifted within the hour.
No additional injuries were reported. The cause of the vehicle fire remains under investigation.
