maryland criminal summons

CALLAWAY, Md. — A 34-year-old Lexington Park man is facing a theft charge after he allegedly used the “skip scanning” technique to conceal items at a self-checkout lane and then walked out of the Callaway Weis supermarket without paying for his entire order.

The incident occurred on June 26, 2025, but charges were filed against Nicholas Carman Bohrer on Aug. 5, 2025, after an investigation by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the statement of probable cause, a Weis employee provided deputies with surveillance video from the self-checkout area. The video allegedly shows Bohrer scanning approximately eight items while concealing seven other items — including a rib-eye steak and tilapia — in his bags.

In a twist, after bagging all the items, Bohrer experienced a malfunction with the checkout machine. The documents state that after the machine was fixed, Bohrer simply left the register and exited the store with the entire cart, failing to pay for any of the items, including those he had originally scanned. The total value of the stolen goods was $94.40.

Deputies were able to identify Bohrer after matching his vehicle, a red Hyundai SUV with a distinctive white oval sticker, to the one seen in surveillance photos from the incident.

Bohrer has been charged via a criminal summons with theft less than $100, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine. A preliminary inquiry is scheduled for Sept. 19, 2025.
