PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) has officially approved the Generative AI Use Policy and the formation of an AI Advisory Committee to guide the responsible integration of artificial intelligence in county operations. The decision was made during the BOCC’s regular meeting on Jan. 14, 2025.
Ensuring Responsible AI Use
The policy, developed by the Department of Technology Services (TS), provides a framework for ethical, transparent, and secure AI adoption. AI has the potential to enhance government services and efficiency, but it also presents challenges such as data security, misinformation, and ethical considerations. The AI Advisory Committee will oversee AI-related initiatives, ensuring their alignment with county policies and community values.
Committee Structure and Responsibilities
The AI Advisory Committee will serve as an advisory body to the BOCC, evaluating AI applications for security, ethical compliance, and operational impact. It will:
- Recommend strategies for responsible AI adoption across departments.
- Review AI applications for risks, security vulnerabilities, and effectiveness.
- Ensure AI use aligns with county policies on data privacy, transparency, and accountability.
- Provide training and guidance for employees on AI best practices.
The committee will be composed of one delegate from each of the following departments:
- County Administrator’s Office
- County Attorney’s Office
- Department of Human Resources
- Department of Communications and Media Relations
- Department of Technology Services, including a technical lead
Meetings will be held quarterly, with additional sessions scheduled as necessary.
Policy Adaptability and Oversight
Recognizing the rapid evolution of AI technology, the Generative AI Use Policy is designed to be adaptable. Regular policy reviews and updates will ensure that Calvert County stays ahead of emerging risks while leveraging new opportunities.
To maintain accountability, the committee will operate under a three-year sunset clause, with annual reviews assessing its effectiveness and continued relevance.
No Fiscal Impact; A Commitment to Innovation
The Department of Technology Services has confirmed that there will be no fiscal impact associated with the committee’s formation. The initiative aligns with the county’s strategic goals of innovation, efficiency, and accountability, positioning Calvert County as a leader in responsible AI governance.
