PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) officials recommended the district adopt policy No. 1120 regarding Maryland immigration enforcement in Calvert County Public Schools at the March 12 Board of Education (BOE) meeting.
Director of Student Services Cecelia Lewis presented the policy to the Board of Education (BOE) at the March 12 meeting. The purpose of the policy is to:
- Ensure that Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) schools remain safe and protected spaces for students and staff regardless of citizenship status.
- Ensure immigration enforcement activities do not disrupt the educational mission of CCPS.
- Reflect the guidelines set forth in the Maryland Values Act (House Bill 1222, 2025).
The policy was created to align with Maryland legislation, specifically HB 1222, which passed in 2025. The legislation declares schools as “sensitive” spaces and mandates that school districts develop a policy that aligns with this designation and statewide rules surrounding immigration enforcement.
Lewis said that the policy was developed using the model policy to ensure it followed all the guidelines and met the requirements set forth by the state. She requested the BOE post it for the required 30-day public review period.
The policy will be posted for 30 days before being brought up for discussion or vote by the BOE.
