PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Five months into the fiscal year, Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) Chief Financial Officer Scott Johnson presented a budget update to the Board of Education at their Jan. 15 meeting. The presentation showed the budget following projections laid out last July, when it was adopted.

The budget conversation is important as the board gears up for yet another budget discussion — this time about FY27. The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has not yet released the amounts they plan to disperse to school districts around the state. During the FY26 fiscal year process, MSDE didn’t release these numbers until June 27.

While this budget is currently on track as planned, the update helps stage the conversation for the upcoming FY27 budget discussions. In addition to this fiscal year’s budget line items, Johnson laid out budgets from FY24 and FY25 compared to FY26 — which may help shape next year’s projections and the board’s funding choices.

Board members have remained concerned over the last year about maintaining a balanced budget in the face of fluctuating enrollment and looming state budget cuts, and having to take from the district’s fund balance to cover costs.

The board is also waiting on an efficiency report from Public Works LLC. The report is expected at the Feb. 12 meeting. Among the considerations Johnson suggested was a) whether the board would request the minimum amount of appropriations from the county for FY27, or would request more and b) if they would consider staffing changes if those changes were recommended in Public Works LLC’s report.

Calvert’s BOE will meet again this month on Jan. 29.
