PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County is considering changes to its policy regarding selection and purchase of materials of instruction and library materials (2305).
Director of System of Instruction Performance Scott McComb presented the recommendations at the April 9 Board of Education (BOE) meeting. McComb suggested changing some of the language in Section A of the policy to clarify that purchased library materials will be aligned with the curriculum and consistent with the mission of Calvert County Public Schools.
McComb also suggested shortening the definition of “curriculum” in the policy, which he said was “unnecessarily lengthy,” and shortened it to read: “A framework of standards, content, skills, instructional practices, and materials that guide teaching and learning. Curriculum is aligned with Maryland College and Career Ready Standards and, where appropriate, national standards, such as the Advanced Placement program.”
Additionally, McComb suggested the following changes:
- Adding “diverse perspectives and experiences, and information literacy” to the purpose of the policy.
- Under the policy statement section, changing “computer software” to “digital applications” and changing “accurate, current, and challenging” to “rigorous, relevant, accurate, and inclusive.”
- Under the policy statement, additional language changes about preparing students for community and civic life, and encouraging them to pursue learning about topics of personal interest.
Policy #2305 will be posted for 30 days with the suggested changes, at which time the BOE will vote to decline or accept those changes.
