PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — A Saint Leonard man was arrested Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025, after a Calvert County sheriff’s deputy stopped his pickup for speeding and later reported finding a loaded handgun, brass knuckles and signs of alcohol impairment.

Deputy C. Hill wrote that his radar clocked John Power Waters Cammack, 25, driving 65 mph in a 45 mph zone near Dares Beach Road before pulling him over on Church Street in Prince Frederick. Hill said Cammack had bloodshot, glassy eyes, droopy eyelids, slurred speech and a moderate odor of alcohol. When asked how much he had consumed, Cammack allegedly replied, “Too many.”

Field sobriety tests showed multiple indicators of impairment, including six clues on the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, according to the arresting officer. A breath test later registered a 0.22 blood alcohol concentration, nearly three times the legal limit.

Hill reported recovering a set of brass knuckles from Cammack’s pocket. A Smith & Wesson M&P Shield Plus 9mm handgun was found in the truck’s center console, loaded with a 13-round magazine and one round in the chamber, along with two additional fully loaded magazines. Cammack did not have a Maryland carry permit, according to court records.

Cammack is charged with loaded handgun in a vehicle, handgun in a vehicle, concealing a dangerous weapon, driving under the influence, driving while impaired and speeding. Under Maryland law, the weapons charges each carry a maximum penalty of up to three years in jail, while a first-time DUI offense carries up to one year.

He was released on his own recognizance on Nov. 8. A trial is scheduled for Jan. 9, 2026, at in Calvert District Court, Courtroom 2.
