SOLOMONS, Md. — The Calvert County Library is hosting a one-of-a-kind event for tweens ages 8–12 at its Southern Branch located at 13920 H.G. Trueman Road, Solomons.

The event, which will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 7, from 6 to 7 p.m., welcomes tweens to gather in the library’s meeting room for the “Balloon Olympics,” where you’ll play sports with balloons.

In addition to the balloon sports, the library’s Facebook page advertised “activities, communities and fun.” Registration is required for the event, and the library recommends calling ahead at least two weeks in advance if you need accessibility accommodations — two weeks before Jan. 7 is Dec. 24.

Though the library’s post and event page didn’t specify what kind of sports will be played at the Balloon Olympics, playing sports with balloons has long been a formal and fun activity that people of all ages can enjoy. Events where a balloon can be swapped in for a ball are silly ways to bond with friends or make new ones.

If you can’t make this event or the Balloon Olympics aren’t your thing, the Calvert County Library has plenty of other activities to choose from in January and beyond.

The Southern Branch hosts a Tween Night the first Wednesday of each month, and other Calvert libraries host similar events. The Twin Beaches branch hosts a Tween Night the third Tuesday of every month, with new themes, activities, and snacks. The best way to stay up to date on library activities is their events page. Past events have included K-Pop and Crafts, board games, holiday crafts, and more.
