PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — CalvertHealth presented its annual Strategic Plan Progress Report at the Sept. 9 Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting and showcased overall positive results.

The strategic plan is for the fiscal years 2024 through 2028. This current plan represents a comprehensive overhaul of the system’s culture, care outcomes and community efforts, and marked a major change from past years, including a new mission statement.

The plan includes six strategic initiatives: Culture and Competence, Primary Care, Outpatient Services, Clinical Service Lines, Community Hospital Care and Community Partnerships.

The aim of these initiatives, working together, is to increase access to care, improve patient outcomes and recruit and retain talent.

“We wanted to make sure that at the top of our strategic plan was quality and patient safety,” said CalvertHealth President and CEO Jeremy Bradford.

Bradford said CalvertHealth has earned several distinctions for 2025, including an Outstanding Patient Experience distinction from Healthgrades, a Stroke 2025 GoldPlus Award in Stroke Care from the American Heart Association, and a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Regarding Strategic Initiative 1, Culture and Competence, CalvertHealth highlighted the following key achievements:

  • Great Place to Work Certification
  • Laser focus on quality, safety and accountability
  • Efficiency Performance Improvement Work – Excellence in Action
  • Brand Standards – patient experience and physical environment

Bradford went on to say that while CalvertHealth, like most hospital systems, is experiencing staffing shortages, his team works with third parties to help with recruitment efforts to bring the right people to the area.

“At the end of the day, it’s the experience that they have when they come to the community,” he said.

He said the work culture and the benefits of living in Calvert County are essential to keeping talent in the community, and that it’s not just about the providers, but the experiences their families have here.

Bradford and the board acknowledged the clear difference in services at CalvertHealth since the strategic plan was launched and the importance of a community hospital.

CalvertHealth Medical Center has a 2.5-star rating on Google, with 313 reviews. Many of those are about emergency room experiences.
