PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert’s Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) approved two budget adjustments at the April 7 meeting.
One budget adjustment is for a project to add safety nets at the driving range at the Chesapeake Hills Golf Course. The other is a Strategic Demolition Fund award totaling $300,000 from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development for the Safe Harbor Shelter.
The golf netting project totals $390,000 and is considered a capital improvement project. Funds had to be moved from one project to another to properly account for the expenditure. The nets will be placed at Chesapeake Hills Golf Course, which is owned by the county and operated by Parks and Recreation.
In a previous meeting, Director of Parks and Recreation Bob Branham said the nets were a necessary safety measure and cited the six reported incidents from last year where people were struck by golf balls.
The Safe Harbor grant will allow for expansion of the resource center and construction of transitional housing units. Director of Community Resources Jennifer Moreland explained that they need more space at Safe Harbor, and more long-term options for people to find their own housing. The expanded space was part of the original building when the shelter was first established in the 1990s, and today’s upgrades are part of a revitalized site plan for the space.
Both measures were adopted unanimously by the BOCC.
