United States Senator Ben Cardin (D: Maryland) visited Chaney Enterprises on Wednesday afternoon.ย Chaney Enterprises, opened in 1962 by Babe Chaney, has been in business for 50 years as a concrete manufacturer.ย The tour focused on reclamation, as well as day-to-day operations.
ย
After the mining process is complete, a seven=stage reclamation process takes place at a land once used for mining.ย Chaney Enterprises won an award in 2004 for their reclamation process.ย The process takes years but, in the end, parks and recreation areas end up occupying the former mining sites.ย While it was not a Chaney property, Chaney Enterprises Chief Operating Officer Hall Chaney mentioned Regency Furniture Stadium in St. Charles sits on a former mine site.
ย
Cardin was taken on a tour of the Gardiner Road site in Waldorf, where a reclamation process is underway.ย The tour also went through Chaneyโ€™s Acton Lane property.
ย
Hall Chaney also said concrete is becoming increasingly competitive in cost to asphalt, which has been beneficial to Chaney Enterprises.ย Chaney Enterprises currently focuses on environmentally responsible concrete compounds.ย Over time, concrete requires less treatment than asphalt thus resulting in cost savings for states and for businesses that use concrete parking lots.
ย
โ€œChaney Enterprises is a thriving, growing business that is marking its 50th year in business,โ€ Cardin said.ย โ€œIt is an industry leader in using best practices in its mining operations to protect the environment.ย Their success shows that you can be a successful business and institute environmentally sound practices that sustain the environment for future generations.โ€
ย
Chaney Enterprises services four states and has become an industry leader.
