The race to challenge entrenched Democrat incumbent Steny Hoyer in the November General Election was won within the Republican Party by Calvert County resident Chris Chaffee. The 52-year-old Chaffee, who, like Hoyer, is a New York native who grew up in Prince Georgeโ€™s County, garnered nearly 42 percent of the vote in the GOPโ€™s three-man race.

Chaffee tallied 7,845 votes while another Calvert resident, Mark K. Arness, finished second with 5,842 votes. Charles County resident Tom Potter received 5,129 votes.

Chaffee outpolled his opponents in four of the five jurisdictions comprising Marylandโ€™s Fifth Congressional District. Potter outpolled Chaffee in Charles County by 24 votes.

Chaffee is the father of four and grandfather of two. He and his family have resided in Calvert for the past 22 years.

Chaffee had not responded to a request for comment as this story was being filed.
